Join the Bill Holm Center and the Friends of Native Art for a special virtual tour of Joe & Nancy Kovalik's collections of Northwest Native Art.

Joe & Nancy Kovalik began collecting Northwest Coast Native art in 1989. It was meant to just be art for the house they had recently purchased and the collection now encompasses the entire house. Their grandchildren have grown up learning about the art & meeting the artists. Many pieces were purchased directly from the artists themselves.

Artists represented are, among others, Robert Davidson, David Boxley , David R. Boxley, Ben Davidson, Reg Davidson, Aggie Davis, Isabel Rorick, Alfy Collinson.

Pieces from their collection are often loaned out for display: a Delores Churchill tunic was just returned from the Museum of Fine Art in Boston. Two robes are on their way home from Juneau, Alaska.

Storytelling is central to many Indigenous cultures especially within the Pacific. Join us for a lively presentation about how people across Moananuiākea (the vast Pacific) kept account of their surroundings and histories without ever having a written language. Join Samoan storyteller Kiana Fuega to learn how different fagogo (fables) and tala o le vavau (myths and legends) from islands like Samoa, are important to the oral traditions of passing on information from one generation to the next.

Kiana Fuega is a Samoan educator and storyteller. She was raised in the diaspora with roots in the villages of Olosega, Manu'a and Leone in Amerika Samoa. Her work focuses on the use of culturally-centered approaches toward education and community engagement, including the use of oral traditions to teach parts of history. Kiana is a fellow of the National Pacific American Leadership Institute and completed her degree in Anthropology from the University of Washington where her interests were focused on Indigenous anthropology and decolonization.

Lucinda Turner will discuss the theft and fraud in Northwest Coast Indigenous Art she has witnessed over the last four years.

The presentation will cover copyright infringement, online theft, wood identification, and possible solutions to preserve the sanctity of the art.

About the Speaker:

Lucinda Turner carved with Nisga'a artist Norman Tait for 26 years. She became involved in combating fraudulent art after Norman passed in 2016, when she discovered that the works of Norman and other artists were being stolen and listed on the internet for sale. This has evolved into a full-time job. She taught herself to write DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) "takedown" letters on behalf of 50 artists that she represents, sending out over a thousand letters to more than 30 internet companies that were using stolen designs to sell everything from masks to coffee mugs. She is an administrator of two Facebook groups, Native Art Direct From Artists and Fraudulent Native Art Exposed, she has created a fraud registry and an artist registry, and she has recently written an open letter to the Canadian government addressing the issues of fraudulent and stolen indigenous art.

Karen Duffek will feature some of the historical Northwest Coast artworks from the Elspeth McConnell Collection bequeathed to the UBC Museum of Anthropology (MOA) in 2017, and now the subject of study by First Nations artists and community members. She will focus on objects and belongings discussed in her recent book, co-authored with Bill McLennan and Jordan Wilson, Where the Power Is: Indigenous Perspectives on Northwest Coast Art.

About the Speaker

Karen Duffek is the Curator of Contemporary Visual Arts and Pacific Northwest at MOA. Committed to supporting the activation of Northwest Coast Indigenous collections inside and outside the museum, her research, exhibitions, and publications explore the relationships between historical and contemporary art practices, museum collections, communities, and art markets. Among her many exhibitions are In a Different Light: Reflecting on Northwest Coast Art (curated with Bill McLennan and Jordan Wilson, on view at MOA until 2024) and Lawrence Paul Yuxweluptun: Unceded Territories (curated with Tania Willard, 2016). In addition to Where the Power Is (2021), her publications include The Transforming Image: Painted Arts of Northwest Coast First Nations (with Bill McLennan, 2000) and Bill Reid and Beyond: Expanding on Modern Native Art (edited with Charlotte Townsend-Gault, 2005).
